dj hatfield is assistant professor in liberal arts at the berklee college of music in boston. a sociocultural anthropologist, hatfield’s ongoing academic projects include traces of the diverse: taiwanese histories after martial law, which looks at popular culture and public history in contemporary taiwan. he is also the author of several articles on taiwanese religious practice and the book length monograph taiwanese pilgrimage to china: ritual, complicity, community. in addition to his academic work, hatfield brews beer, sings from old tunebooks, and hangs out with a variety of musicians on taiwan. related to this work is hatfield’s taiwan soundscapes project, a documentary and recording and sound installation project focused on contemporary taiwanese soundscapes
