This autumn, I wrote this short conference paper along with Paiwan-Rukai singer-songwriter Dakanow. The paper, which is about Dakanow’s song, “Hometown Mud,” aims to think about how address animates mud in ways that form us as subjects who have failed to care. Dakanow calls this song a metaphor for Arendt’s notion of the “banality of evil.” In response, I try to see how his song generates this effect
