last week, i was at Donghwa University giving a workshop and setting up an exhibit of sound works. as it turned out, i ended up presenting pieces very different from what i thought i would–i had at first thought i would mount a version of work from the summer and had prepared a mix–because of equipment and space limitations. sending my speakers and such from ‘atolan seemed an inconvenience given the short amount of time i had to get everything up; meanwhile, the school of art and the college of indigenous studies had several of those portable speakers with matching microphones one sees at events around the east coast. the challenge of using such speakers appealed to me, so from a piece in which i control timing and sound values relatively closely, i ended up making a piece on mismatched speakers, giving a bit of surprise to the mix. the speakers will always end up out of phase, so trying to figure out how to use them took awhile. although i am not sure whether i am there already, i’d like to do another iteration of this piece or something similar with these speakers

the speakers are very common in taiwanese indigenous communities at family, church, and village events, so the application to a piece about the send off and return of men engaged in the far ocean fishing trade made sense. each of the five speakers in the piece was set amidst a scene that looks like a family gathering, complete with round orange tables, green plastic stools, and cases of taiwan beer and miciw, topped with tarps tied up with pink plastic string and propped with an aluminum bar. all of the speakers play simultaneously, but alternate between the sound of the ocean, someone telling a story, and a song. when making the mix, i tried to activate songs and stories in only one or at most a pair of speakers, leaving the other three speakers broadcasting waves. however, because i cannot control the playback speed of the speakers or start them at the same time, the realization of the piece differs from the original mix as the speakers go out of synch. this means that the piece may be all ocean sounds or the clamour of five stories or songs. the density feels like a row of karaokes or a town in which all of the men are leaving or returning to large family gatherings. otherwise, it may be a deserted townscape, eerily set for a gathering to which no one will ever show up. both of these possibilities are suggestive to me

the exhibit is currently at the Donghwa University Arts Center, a glass building beside the campus lake. hopefully, there will be another iteration
